REPEATING EVENTS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
Developing Counselors for the Muslim Youth Camp
http://www.muslimyouthcamp.org
As-salamu alaikum Dear Friend,
I am writing this letter to you because I believe you share the same hopes for a self-sustaining, professional, dynamic, faithful, and well-integrated American Muslim community as I do. This is why I have dedicated much of my efforts to the Muslim Youth Camp (MYC)over the last 15 years. You already know that the MYC has stood the test of time, transitioning from the dedication of my parents, “Uncle Marghoob (Allah yarhamuhu) and Aunti Iffat” to a formal and diverse Board of Directors and Executive Committee, made up of members who know MYC from their youth. For 47 years MYC Muslim Youth Camp has been learning from the evolving Muslim community and has thrived and improved as a result of the energy of the volunteer staff. Each year through a distinctly American Muslim identity, this staff brings MYC values into reality:
-Sincere respect in understanding different Islamic perspectives, -Faith in one God who guides humanity to its fullest potential, -Respect for each soul’s spiritual journey
Counselors are invaluable contributors in teaching these values. Not only do they care for the physical well-being of the campers 24 hours-a-day for the entire week, but the counselors’ impact is seen through their encouragement, listening, problem-solving, and building bonds of friendship. They are young adults in their 20’s, who are wonderful American Muslim role models, and they give up a week’s salary or limited vacation in order to give Muslim kids a great camping and community experience. Perhaps you remember a special counselor from your childhood or the tremendous effort you invested when you were a counselor.
Counselors at non-Muslim camps such as the YMCA or JCC receive roughly $400 in salary for the same job. Currently MYC counselors receive no salary. Each year MYC spends roughly $12,000 to cover registration and travel expenses for 20 counselors. MYC is seeking your support to build a fund that will formalize the counseling program, covering all expenses, including salaried counseling positions, as well as further development and growth of the counseling program. MYC has already developed a successful Counselor Training Manual and has implemented on-site counselor training with advice from specialists in developmental psychology and youth education. MYC would like to employ the special skills of American Muslim professionals in these fields to offer training programs that reach new Muslim Youth Camps across America. It is an exciting and very possible venture that will bring the uplifting dynamics of nearly half a century of MYC to the next 50 years of the American Muslim experience. MYC intends to continue to be a pioneer in creating an healthy American Muslim community, built through the desire of individuals to share and study their faith in friendship, fun, and the quiet inspiration of nature. If this vision reflects your hopes for the American Muslim community, we thank you for supporting its growth and vibrancy through your prayer and donation.
Supporting the Muslim Youth Camp Counseling Program is easy, just go to http://www.muslimyouthcamp.org . If you would like more information about the development of the counseling program, please send me the home address and email at which you which you would like to receive such updates. May God (Most High) increase you in joy and prosperity and reward you for your gifts.
Many sincere thanks,
Amira Quraishi
MYC Counselor Coordinator

Salaams all,
If you or anyone you know falls into the categories below we would truly appreciate you calling us and letting us interview you. As you all know there are very few statistics dealing with these specific ethnic populations and if we want law enforcement, health care professionals, and other ‘helpers’ to be culturally competent and culturally aware we have to provide them with statistics and research (unfortunately the world we live in now needs things to be proven to them). Your participation will help us understand women’s experiences and develop more effective policies and agency responses. If you have any questions feel free to email or call.

Please read below for details in regards to the pricing and deadlines. For any questions, please contact me or Theresa (contact info is below) with the Chapel of Chimes directly! Irfan
Asalaamu-Alaykum
As many of you know, purchasing graves for you or your family members is not an easy task, but if we are prepared, then it will InshaAllah, make things much easier for our families when our time to leave this world comes! Good grave plots are also hard to find nearby, but Alhamdullilah the Chapel of Chimes in Hayward, (less than 30 min. away from the South Bay) which currently has two other Muslim areas (”The Garden of Noor” and “The Garden of Mercy”), which are both already full (reserved) has recently opened up a new Muslim area with approx. 300 grave plots now available! Many of our parents (including my own father), elders and other community members have already reserved their grave plots at the Chapel of Chimes cemetery more than 10-15 years ago, but now we also have an opportunity to reserve our own space, so that our family members and descendants will be able to visit everyone at the same place, InshaAllah. Alhamdullilah myself and a few other members of SBIA were able to negotiate a discounted price for the new Muslim area (”Garden of Gulshane Rahmat”) at the Chapel of Chimes Cemetery in Hayward, CA. For a limited time only, you and your family can SAVE APPROX. $1,200.00 (for a single grave) if you reserve your grave plot by September 1st, 2008! (NOTE: You do NOT have to be a member of SBIA to reserve a grave at the discounted price)!!! The discounted price for a single grave is $4,154.44. This price already include the approx. 19% discount savings as well as the required endowment fee of $390.00)! Please Note that on Average the prices for grave plots increase between 6%-8% every year! So the longer you delay, the more expensive it will be!!! The Chapel of Chimes is also offering a special Financing Plan, which comes to about $70.00 per month (for a single grave), but if you are able to pay off the grave plot within 3 years of signing, ALL finances charges will be refunded to you!!! If you would like to reserve a grave plot for yourself or a family member, please contact Theresa Paris (see below) for additional information. Please also feel free to forward this email to anyone else you know, who may be interested. Again, this is a limited time offer and their prices may be increasing on Sept. 1st, 2008!
JazakAllah

During the event, Dr. Honerkamp, a graduate of the historic al-Qarawayyin University in Morocco and a leading expert on the relationship between shariah and Islamic spirituality, will discuss how Muslims were able to contribute so effectively to the civic, intellectual, and spiritual life of medieval Spain. You will also hear from representatives of Zaytuna Institute about its evolving national role in creating a reputable academic institution. We will also invite you to travel with us toward a bold new future for Muslims in America by participating in Zaytuna’s new “Count Me In” campaign. Improving Organ Transplantation by Tony Allison, D.Phil., B.M., Transplant Scientist
Tuesday, August 12, 2008 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.
SRI Menlo Park, Middlefield Road at Ringwood - Dining Room in the International Building,
http://www.cafescipa.org | john.mcintosh@cafescipa.org
Come to SRI for a conversation with our next Café Scientifique speaker. Do not park at SRI’s main entrance at 333 Ravenswood Ave. Entrances to Conference Center parking are next to the church on Ravenswood and at Ringwood and Middlefield.
Every year, kidney transplants improve the quality of life of more than 20,000 U.S. citizens who are on renal dialysis. Heart and kidney transplants keep alive many thousands of patients who would otherwise die. Organ transplants are rejected unless recipients are immunosuppressed. Cyclosporine and Tacrolimus have been used for that purpose for decades, but they damage kidneys and have other adverse effects. Allison applied observations on inherited defects of purine synthesis to design an immunosuppressive drug (mycophenolate mofetil) with fewer side effects. It is now widely used in transplantation.
Organs that are stored before transplantation are anoxic, and when blood passes through them after the operation they can be damaged. A way to minimize reperfusion injury, and thereby improve the function of transplanted organs, will be discussed.
Allison received a D.Phil. and a medical qualification from Oxford University. He was a travelling fellow with Linus Pauling at the California Institute of Technology. The first half of his career was spent with the Medical Research Council (M.R.C.) of the U.K. In 1981 he accepted a position as a Vice President for Research at Syntex, Palo Alto, where he initiated the development of CellCept, which is marketed by Roche to prevent organ graft rejection. Allison is currently V.P. for Research of Alavita Pharmaceuticals, Mountain View.
Café Scientifique events are open to all free of charge. No reservations are necessary. For more information please visit our web site: http://www.cafescisv.org/ . Check the web for information about future and past events, including photos. Feel free to forward this announcement to interested friends and colleagues. Sign up here to receive announcements.
Sponsored by ROXRO PHARMA and SRI, Café Scientifique is a place where anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology and debate science issues outside a traditional academic context. We meet monthly to discuss a variety of science topics. Feel free to forward this message to anyone you think could be interested.
Coffee, tea and biscotti will be complimentary, provided by SRI - Bring your own mug if you wish to avoid using disposable cups.
Courtesy of Kepler’s there will be a drawing for a $30 gift card for books or merchandise at Kepler’s on El Camino Real in Menlo Park. Those who choose to enter the drawing will have their names added to the Kepler’s mailing list. Special thanks to Kepler’s for supporting Cafe Sci.
If you do not wish to receive Café Scientifique announcements please send an email to unsubscribe@cafescipa.org .

UPF’s First Release in Movie Theatres. Get ready to laugh with your friends! UPF is pleased to announce that Allah Made Me Funny: Live in Concert is coming to theatres. “Comedy has the power to build bridges and reach broad audiences that may not watch traditional historical documentaries,” said Alex Kronemer, the film’s Co-Executive Producer. “The release of this film in theatres provides an easy way for American Muslims to build those bridges, just by bringing a friend of a different faith to the movies.” Landmark Theatres is releasing the film in select cities from October 3rd through October 9th. If ticket sales are strong the film will show longer. We’re asking you to help us make this week-long screening period a success.
About the film - This landmark concert film follows three acclaimed comedians on stage and off as they reveal the humorous truth of what it’s really like to be Muslim in America. Mo Amer, Azhar Usman, and Preacher Moss poke fun at themselves, their communities, government, human nature and the tricky predicament of living in post-9/11 America. Accompanied by the music of rising Indie scene artists, Allah Made Me Funny: Live in Concert is rollicking good fun and gives people of all cultural backgrounds an opportunity to laugh hard, drop their guard and open their minds.
Take action: HELP US SHATTER ATTENDANCE RECORDS!
1. Sponsor a screening and invite friends of different faiths. 2. Help your local religious/cultural organizations purchase and market group tickets. (During the release of ‘Passion of the Christ’, churches nationwide bought large blocks of tickets and invited friends. This strategy works and can be replicated.) The film will be released right after Eid. People should be in the mood to celebrate! 3. Publicize – join our Facebook group, distribute flyers and posters, and make announcements. 4. If you don’t see your city listed above, a separate screening can be arranged in your city.
Congratulations UPF Underwriters, Pioneer Members & supporters on our first theatrical release!
